Mighta Missed Monday: Young Swift

J.Cole has the whole North Carolina putting on. Maybe they have been putting on but now most of the country is checking for them now. I couldn’t name 3 rappers between Petey Pablo and J.Cole from North Carolina but I can roll off at least 7 after J.Cole. Young Swift would be in the front of the 7 after Cole.

I heard about Young Swift through Shaheim Reid’s introduction series. Did some research and came up with the following. He’s signed to an Atlanta based label: Charge Nation and has an impresseive youtube catalogue. The Mixtape Guns & Roses is sitting at almost 15,000 downloads with more to surely come. Oh, did I mention he has a bonafide Akon co-sign? Co-signs usually don’t mean shit to me but Akon finds them people-*cough*Lady Gaga, T-Pain*cough*. This is an artist you mighta missed but now get a chance to catch up on.

I’ve left some visuals after the jump and the mixtape. I like visuals because you can be anybody via audio, but you can’t hide corny too long in video’s.

Pimp or Die – T.Shirt

This is conceptual art. The beat co-insides with the spoken word to evoke emotion. At first I couldn’t grasp it. A rapper, rapping off beat? What is the point of this? I cast it off as I often do. This is an emotional ode to “her” the beat aides the listener in feeling what T.Shirt feels. It’s unlike anything you’ve heard before. Fuck that rapping to the beat shit, IT WAS DOPE.

Video: From Ashy to Classy – Donnell Rawlings

With his firm grasp of the outrageous, Donnell Rawlings (HBO’s The Wire) was born to make people laugh. He grabbed America’s funny bone on Chappelle’s Show with characters like Ashy Larry and the distinctively jheri-curled Beautiful. Now Donnell goes even further, taking on the entire American culture with impersonations of everybody from Michael Jackson to Barack Obama, and bringing his audience to tears with his razor-sharp insights and fearless observations.

This is funny stuff. In case you didn’t know “Ashy to Classy” is a Biggie phrase; “Sky’s the limit”. I left the remainder of the footage after the jump.

Nothing Like It – J.Cole

J.Cole was out in L.A. and decided to release a freestyle, via Ustream, over a Kanye West beat.

I added Beanie Sigel’s “Nothing Like It” after the jump. Cole’s cool but Beanie is something else. Nobody touching Beans nigga.

Video: Cremate ‘Em – Fat Trel

Remember him from Mighta Missed Monday? Yea Fat Trel is at it again with a video. Shot by 1st Impressions Studio Fat Trel takes a stroll in the cemetery with his goons. Just in case you don’t get the metaphor: he’ll kill you. Lyrically or otherwise–site the lyrics–Fat Trel isn’t for games. Cremate ‘Em is off of the mixtape No Secretz. DMV has another one.

In another observation, what kind of Northface vest is that? I know the steep tech jacket but what kind of vest are they wearing? That shit is H.A.M.

Carmelo traded to the New York Knicks

So, now Brooklyn born, Carmelo Anthony is a New York Knick. This acquisition is good for the Knicks this season. In the final 25 games they’ll score hella points and let opponents score hella points but it will make for exciting basketball. The Knicks team now is a far cry from the yesteryear Knicks whose major draws were Eddie Curry and Stephon Marbury. To think in 2 seasons the Knicks went from the laughing stock of the NBA to the envy of all GM’s abroad. I applaud Isiah Thomas Donnie Walsh and The Dolan family. You’ve turned the Knicks into contenders. Can’t ask for more than that, unless you are a New Yorker.

My Town – Jeff Chery

I like this track just not the auto-tune. I don’t know who was on the hook but Funkybeats produced it. The way the beat was configured auto-tune just made sense so I get why they went that way. I don’t know if it was homie’s voice or just my sheer impatience with auto-tune but I didn’t like the hook. I’m frankly getting annoyed with repeating 4 words on hooks also. I have to reaffirm that I do like the track.

XXL Freshman Cover 2011

If you are a “Hip-Hop Head” and love lyrics and lyricism you won’t like this cover. Not saying that lyricists aren’t on the cover but it’s obvious that wasn’t the focal point of the cover. The main idea behind this cover is to move units. It’s about money, getting more ad dollars. The people featured buzz’s are bigger than people that were snubbed so they made the list. This is nothing more than a ploy to sell more magazines. Don’t let this upset you. With that being said…DOM KENNEDY should have been on the list! Read the rest of this entry »
