Kanye Brings The Pain To A Virgin

Kanye @ Virgin Megastore

Last night Kanye West took over Virgin Megastore in Union Square NYC. As you can see dude brought the blow up bear out and all. Lil’ Mama made a guest appearance but my camera didn’t care for her or her lip gloss.

As the crowd gathered people walked in and out of Virgin with numerous copies of Graduation. It seemed as if it was the only CD in the store. The crowd got bigger and bigger until a flat bed came down 14th street lasting Stronger. Kids and grown folks alike ran in the middle of the street surrounding the track as Kanye performed. The pigs would soon come and shut down the bed forcing Kanye to go inside to sign CD’s. The driver of the flat ed was arrested and the truck was driven away by police.

If the fans in New York are reflective of more across the country then I’d say Kanye is the safe bet right now.

well then, god damn it. i don’t think i can remember the last time a record being this hyped up for 1st day sales – that sounds like something from waaay back in the 1990′s… GO KANYEEZY–YOU ASSHOLE, YOU!

It was packed… but nothing tops Jay-Z appearance at the same Virgin store in 98. Whoa! now the streets was packed with people and it was the middle of the day. You seen so many stars that day.

I have yet to see a in store signing that was that huge. Hey if anyone knows how 50 signing was let us know.

Last night was crazy! We almost got a free performance but Poe Poe shut it down, and the driver is a G! And free ’80′s glasses, what more could you ask for.

Let me just compliment Fifty on the wonderful job he did cross promoting Kanye. Upon his retirement, he can have a career in marketing.

The 50 cent signing was at the BestBuy at 44th and 5th at around 6:30pm yesterday.
I did not attend the signing, but walked by the store since my job is on the same block. At 5:30pm, the line was pretty feeble looking and much smaller than I had expected.
Definitely a quieter setting than in the pictures above. No large 50 cent blow up balloons, and no free props, not even any street teamers handing out free music/posters. There was only one lonely 2′ X 2′ “Curtis” album cover poster in the very front of the store.
I’m not sure what time he showed up, but I’m pretty sure it was nothing like the scene at Virgin Union Square. Great pictures btw!

Shouldn’t Fifty have had a signing in downtown Chicago just to keep up the whole rivalry theme?

AND THEY’RE OFF: It’s way too soon to call yet, but in early retail reports, IDJ’s Kanye West is in the lead with first-week estimates at more than 700k that has wonderers wondering if the rapper can do 800k. Shady/Aftermath/Interscope’s 50 Cent is in the 550k range with an outside chance at 600k, while SBMG Nashville’s Kenny Chesney is headed for 450k with a shot at 500k. More news as we get it. THIS JUST IN: OFFICIAL QUOTE FROM BILLBOARD.COM
“Billboard has learned that today’s SoundScan Building Chart indicates first-day sales of 437,000 for West’s “Graduation,” 310,000 for 50 Cent’s “Curtis” and 107,000 for Chesney’s “Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates.” The Building Charts offer an indication of how races shape up each week for SoundScan’s final charts, which post projected national sales each Wednesday morning, extrapolated from a panel of merchants that represents more than 90% of the U.S. music market.”

In the end the album sales prove nothing other than Def Jam’s greater willingness to reinvest company money into Kanye’s album as opposed to Interscope’s reluctance to do the same with 50′s

A company that isn’t willing to spend money to promote most of its artist is going to spend that same money buying their own albums? Considering the state of the record business, that sounds like something from the imagination of paranoid (Fifty) artist. In other words, it makes sense when an artist complains about but NO sense when you THINK about it. @ NATIVE/HEADBANGER
