Throwback Thursdays
“New York New York” The Dogg Pound

Yo B, Turn the speakers up Money, Aight, Yo God Yo God, Yo I Got Mad Skills

One thing you had to give the West coast is they’re mad funny. Being from New York it kinda made me feel funny to like this song but f*ck it. I knew bout snoop and wanted to wear khakis before B.I.G. was around. New York New York was one of my jams during the whole “East Coast West Cost Beef”. They even shot up the set of this video shoot and the unknown assailants got away. Queens Group’s Mobb Deep and Capone-N-Noreaga released a track titled L.A. L.A. responding to the track. It’s still East Coast all day every day…Big Up

This was the bigger song, but CNN & Mobb Deep’s answer track ‘LALA’ was the classic. ‘NYNY’ was more controversial for Snoop kicking the Twin Towers down in the video (pre 9/11 sensitivity obviously). Nore, Prodigy and Tragedy (some of you might not be old enough to remember him) killed the Dogg Pound and anyone else who had a problem with NYC. That was the good ole days when NY had the deepest bench in the league! Mobb Deep was at their peak, CNN was set to release that classic first album (and give us our first peak at a slim, pre-Superthug, NORE), Puff and B.I.G ran the game, and CLUE was still releasing 5 mic mix tapes (official).

Even though this song is hot and a classic, I hated them for this. I remember watching this video and wondering how they were kicking buildings over and standing on brownstone steps. They just violated us and it sucked, but I’m older and I respect it and bump it on my ipod.

Although I have to admit that this joint is hotter than LA LA in my opinion, Marely Marl killed the beat in LA LA. Both songs are classic.
