Double Up – R. Kelly

Kells Double Up

R. Kelly has remained relevant for the last 16 years. From the New Jack Swing Era with “Vibe” to the sounds pioneered by Puff with “Down Low”. The last few years he’s abandoned his writing skills to satisfy the “106″ crowd. On his 9th LP titled “Double Up” Kells drafts anyone and everyone for this effort. Artists like Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Swizz Beatz, Chamillionaire, T-Pain, T.I. to name a few make feature appearances.

The change in R. Kellys style (I call it the Trapped in the closet flow) is all over this album. Sometimes it gives you a laugh (Ex: Leave Your Name) while others just confuse you. On “The Zoo” he actually imitates monkey sounds on the hook. You’d think an artist who has written for the likes of Celine Dion and Michael Jackson would have some reservations when it comes to sounding like a complete buffoon. The “I’m a Flirt” Remix is a guilty pleasure Fo Sho. Originally on Lil’ Bow Wow’s album, Kells straight jacks it, calls on T.I. and T-Pain to make a club banger.

Another song that makes for good listening is “Same Girl”. It features fellow crooner Usher Raymond. Basically the two are boinking the same frizzle and find out. On “Real Talk” the Creep digs deep into his writing skills and speaks for all Nyukkahs, mad funny. Ludacris aka Mr. Save Any Track spits alongside Kid Rocks guitar riffs on “Rock Star”. Song isn’t groundbreaking but I can hear it blaring from cars this summer. The soap opera inspired “Best Friend” features Keyshia Cole and Polow Da Don. Listening to this solidifies in my mind that he thought that closet shit was a good idea. I can feel myself getting dumber after each track.

There a few really wack fillers on here (Rollin, Tryin to get a number, Get Dirty, Sweet Tooth) that make you put in TP2. He revisits conception on the track “Havin A Baby”. Dude should’ve left it alone cause “Half on a Baby” was flawless. “Sex Planet” sucks, point blank. He reaches out with “Rise Up”, a tribute to the victims of the Virgin Tech slaying. Honestly, I was more moved by Lil’ Flips tribute. Dude really trying hard not to go to jail. I can’t fron the closing track is fun. On “I Like Love” Kells sings over a reggae influenced rhythm. Song is cool, I can see this bumping poolside in JA. All in all I don’t feel this album. Dude really dumbed down for this one. It’s like Dave Chappelle made a fake album impersonating Kells. Straight to the bootlegger for this Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!
