It’s been 5 years since Diddy released his last LP. Musically he has been irrelevant for the last few. Through Broadway (A Raisin in the Sun), activism (VOTE or DIE campaigns, and running the NYC marathon to raise money for inner city schools), fashion (winning the coveted Vanguard Award), television (MTV’s Making The Band), and an official name (Diddy) change Sean John Combs continued to keep his vow of never stopping. This fall marks his musical comeback with “Press Play”. He names it “Press Play” with intentions of you only having to do just that, no skipping any tracks here. And we at Pardonmeduke agree. I was really hoping Blue Hefner didn’t get the sophomore jinx. As most of you already know, Lloyd Banks got leaked over a year ago. Rumor has it that a groupie he was messing with had two cd’s he left behind. After failed attempts of trying to get him the cd’s the songs were sold and the streets had “The Big Withdrawl”. There was so much fire in that disc that a homerun was almost undeniable. Fear of low album sales a bunch of new songs were recorded. Bank proclaimed that he had no doubt that “Rotten Apple” would top “The Hunger For More”. Read the rest of this entry »

I first heard about Robin Thicke some time ago. Andre Harrell had started a new label a few years ago and he had an artist he felt would change the game. I too thought Robin was destined for greatness…then I saw his video. Dude had long hair (Strike 1), was singing R&B Rock (Strike 2) and dressed like a freaky boy (Strike 3). Make a long story short NU America Records faded away and so did Robin. Luckily for him a producer by the name of Pharrell Williams took an interest in him and helped breathe new life and a new sound into his second effort. The Evolution of Robin Thicke defnetly sums up this album perfectly. He has the Pop appeal of Justin Timberlake with an adult feel and the vocal stylings of Jon B. His first single Wanna Love You Girl paired up seamlessly with Skate Board P. He held back on his vocal skills to give his audience something new. Someone decided to re-release Shooter on his second album this time featuring Lil’ Wayne. Now I have no idea how this collabo came to pass but the little kids eat it up. On Got To Be Down Robin keeps up with Faith Evans making this a callabo worth listening to. The drums on Cocaine will have you dancing at the drop of the beat. Hopefully the next LP will just be as tight.

The Savior of the Skaterboarders is here and he has something to say, but what are you trying to tell us. Lupe is good, don’t get it twisted but this album is in the middle of bootleging and buying it. These artist need to really work to get my dollar, and his other mixtapes (Fahrenheit 1/15 Part I & Part II) are way better. Kick Push was a great introduction but it also opened the flood gates for all the other Lupes of the world. In the streets, there are millions of cookie cutout versions of him, and that’s good for him but bad for us. It makes me sick, they need to get an identity!!! His second single, I Gotcha was cool too, but he didn’t have to put it out as a single. But Daydreamin’ w/Jill Scott was perfect! Real w/ Sarah Green is a favorite of mine, the beat and Sarah Green just touch my soul. And I can’t talk about this album without talking about Pressure w/ Jay-Z. One Take Hov blessed his little homie, and the song is a hit. When I listen to the song, I feel like I’m at the Grand Canyon with Lupe & Jay-Z, chillin’. Good trip! Lupe does have thing about him where he get political without getting political ie American Terrorist & Kick Push II (which was a waste of time).
The album is descent but it could be a whole lot better especial with all his hype. But he is FRESH though.
